Greetings From Greece
Hello Travel Friends,
I’ve just returned from an extraordinary 10-day journey through the Greek Isles, exploring Athens, Santorini, Crete, and Mykonos. Each destination offered its own distinct allure; from the ancient majesty of Athens to the beauty of Santorini's sunsets, the rugged landscapes of Crete to the vibrant energy of Mykonos, it was an amazing trip that I am, as always, so thrilled to have experienced and grateful for the opportunity to share with you.
ATHENS
Athens, is the quintessential starting or ending point for most travelers. Here, history comes alive—not just in marveling at the ruins of the Acropolis (which was of course wow-worthy), but in the daily lives of the Greeks. Their heritage is not merely a relic of the past; their traditions continue to shape their way of life today. One of the best representations of these traditions is in the cuisine and Athens has no shortage of amazing dining options. Our first taste was at a small, restaurant on a rooftop with stunning views of the illuminated Acropolis. Family owned and the kind of place only a local would know about, the owner presented us with an amazing meal full of Greek favorites, encapsulating the rich flavors and warm hospitality that define Greek culture. Loved my short stay here, managed to check the Parthenon of my travel checklist and then it was off to the islands!
WHERE I STAYED: Grand Resort Lagonissi
We were graciously hosted by the Grand Resort Lagonissi, a stunning beach resort just 40 minutes from Athens city center. Beathtaking views of the Aegean Sea, pristine beaches, nine exquisite restaurants, and a variety of room categories to suit every need. A perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Highlight: The waterfront private pool suites!
SANTORINI
Santorini was the island that most closely matched the image I had in my head before coming to Greece. The white-washed buildings and blue domes, the winding streets and cafes, the local shops and artisans—it was almost exactly as I pictured it, but better.
While we of course visited the famous and beautiful town of Oia, my favorite experience was our guide and local expert taking us to lesser known towns of Pyrgos and Megalochori - places that seem to beg you to slow down and get lost in.
WHERE I STAYED: Santo Mine
Perfection. This property opened just days before our arrival. Set on the outskirts of Oia, this is the impressive sister property to Santo Pure. Clean lines, elemental design and luxurious touches throughout, they’ve created a truly tranquil retreat.
Highlight: The sunsets. Their location allows for the most stunning sunset views on the island.
CRETE
Where the Greeks go. Surrounded by rugged hills and olive groves, the area around Elounda is perfect for exploring the natural wonders. Besides basking in the splendor of its crystal clear waters and sandy beaches, we ventured inland to the mountains to see the impressive gorges and vistas.
A visit to the historic island of Spinalonga, once a Venetian fortress transformed into a leper colony was haunting and beautiful. Now an enthralling archaeological site and UNESCO World Heritage Site it stands with a dark and fascinating history that was wildly interesting to discover.
Crete felt real - the kind of place Europeans vacation year after year, generation after generation to get away from the crowds and tourists. It’s a place I would definitely return.
WHERE I STAYED: Elounda Beach Hotel & Villas
Set on a protected bay, the clear waters are almost always calm, beckoning you to dive in.
This large resort boasts seven restaurants, an award-winning spa, and a plethora of room categories to choose from. My favorite are the Waterfront Villas, featuring a large terrace and direct water access just steps from your room.
Highlight: The water—it’s possible I’ve never seen clearer water with such an incredible, vivid turquoise color.
MYKONOS
For a good time, call Mykonos. To cap off my Greek sojourn, a colleague and friend joined me as we headed to Mykonos. Sexy beach clubs, late-night parties, poolside DJs spinning lounge music, and beautiful people everywhere—it’s a playground for those who love to indulge in life’s pleasures. But Mykonos also has a soul. Wander through the labyrinthine streets and you'll be mesmerized by the sights and sounds that give this island its unique charm.
Whenever I find myself in a destination predominantly occupied by tourists, I rely on the locals for the best experiences. My two favorite spots in Mykonos were recommended by those who call this island home. So, talk to the hotel staff, make friends with the shop owner, and engage with the people around you. They hold the key to uncovering the true essence of a place—those hidden gems and authentic experiences that make travel profoundly enriching.
WHERE I STAYED: Myconian Korali
You all know I LOVE a Relais & Chateaux property, which is precisley why I chose this one from the Myconian Collection. Spacious rooms with gorgeous views of the bay, terraces with private pools or hot tubs, and of course - delicious dining. This place was a vibe and located just minutes from Mykonos town!
Highlight: There are 3 hotels on this property with their own restaurants and pools that are accessible to all guests.
REFLECTIONS
Reflecting on this journey, I am struck by the vast differences of each destination and the importance of knowing each island’s identity. Each island has its own personality, flavors, and stories that I am incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to experience. Whether it was a family-owned rooftop restaurant in Athens, our spirited guide singing in the streets of Pyrgos, a tiny artisan shop in Mykonos, a cozy, back-alley eatery recommended by a new friend, sipping Grecian wines at a cafe, or just relaxing by the water, these experiences brought the true essence of Greece to life.
What truly made this journey unforgettable were the connections with my colleagues both from the states and of course the locals, who so graciously demonstrated their love and passion for their home with us.
This trip has enriched me in countless ways, deepening my appreciation for the beauty, culture, and spirit of each place I visited and reminded me of the endless wonders the world has to offer. I hope you get the opportunity to visit this glorious country, and when you’re ready to go, I am of course, here to help. :)
Cheers,
Amie OBrien
