What to expect on Safari.

At a luxury safari lodge, a game drive is not just a simple excursion – it's a carefully curated experience bringing you into the heart of the African wilderness with more than a few luxuries along the way.

Each day presents two opportunities for game drives during the hours the wildlife are most active, dawn and dusk. This is the only time I am happy to wake up before dawn! Game drives are in open sided, comfortable 4x4 vehicles designed to provide unobstructed views and are operated by a guide and tracker who possess intimate knowledge of the land and its inhabitants -allowing you to witness the incredible wildlife and surroundings.

Following morning drives you return to the lodge to indulge in a delicious breakfast and the afternoon to enjoy the luxurious accommodations, spa, and pool or engage in the many cultural experiences available.

Early evening drives often end with one of my favorite bush traditions... the sundowner. Your guide and tracker find a magnificent spot to set up a picnic of cocktails and snacks against the backdrop of an awe-inspiring sunset.

In the evenings you are welcomed back with warm towels and refreshments, setting the stage for an evening of relaxation and reflection. Dinner showcases local flavors and is often enjoyed under a starlit sky or in the cozy ambiance of the camp's dining area. Sometimes your are joined by the guides and trackers who share their stories of the land, animals, and their experiences in the bush.

African Safari is an adventure that seamlessly blends luxury and authenticity, creating memories that will forever remain in your heart.

What to pack, what not to pack,

and how to fit it all in a tiny bag!

Packing for a safari requires careful consideration to ensure you're well-prepared for the adventure. From what to pack and avoid packing, luggage size restrictions, and the convenience of laundry services, here's a comprehensive guide on what to pack.

Pack this:

  • Clothing: Opt for neutral-colored, lightweight clothing that blends well with the natural surroundings. Long-sleeved shirts and pants provide protection against both the sun and insects. A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a buff or scarf for dust protection are also recommendedl.

  • Footwear: Sturdy, comfortable closed-toed shoes are a must. Choose well-worn hiking boots or trail shoes for comfort during game drives and walks.

  • Outerwear: Pack a lightweight, waterproof jacket for unexpected rain and chilly mornings or evenings. Temperatures can vary, so layering is key.

  • Protection: Sunscreen with a high SPF, lip balm, and insect repellent are crucial. The sun in safari destinations can be intense, and insect protection is essential in wildlife-rich areas.

  • Binoculars and Camera: Enhance your wildlife viewing experience with a good pair of binoculars. Don't forget extra camera batteries, memory cards, and any necessary charging equipment to capture those stunning moments.

  • Medications and First Aid: Bring any necessary prescription medications, along with a basic first aid kit containing adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any personal medications.

  • Adapters and Chargers: Check the plug types used at your safari destination and bring appropriate adapters for your electronic devices.

Don’t pack this:

  • Bright/dark-Colored Clothing: many people think this is so you do not attract attention to the animals but it's mostly because the flies are attracted to the dark colors!

  • Heavy Luggage: Safaris often involve small charter flights or vehicles with limited space. Pack efficiently to avoid exceeding luggage size restrictions. Carry-on size soft packs are most common.

  • Too Many Clothes: Overpacking clothes is a common mistake. Safari lodges offer daily laundry services, so you can re-wear items during your trip. I recommend packing all solids so you can mix and match easily!

The Importance of Trip Insurance: A Story

Story time! Some of you may know that I should already be in Kenya! Our original travel dates were August 24 - Sept 4! Well, life happens and that's when trip insurance comes in! The night before our departure I ended up in the ER. Nothing too serious but bad enough that we had to postpone our trip. The week before I was running through an airport trying to catch a connection in Denver, unsuccessfully I might add, and fell, landing on my backpack which resulted in some bruised (possibly fractured) ribs. Nothing you can do about that except let them heal, BUT I also came down with a nasty sinus infection! The coughing and sneezing just made it worse, to the point breathing became very painful. The doctor strongly advised against traveling till my condition improved. We ended up having to postpone. Thank goodness we had an insurance policy to protect our investment and help us recover the losses, It doesn't matter how healthy, prepared, or tough you are, the unexpected can happen - travel insurance should always be considered in your budget for your travels.
